Comprehension
Hades’ job was running the Underworld, the place where you went after you died, the Ancient Greeks believed.
The Underworld was a big place, believed by some at the time to be located at the edges of the Earth. Some parts of the Underworld were really nice. Elysian Fields was the best place to have your afterlife. It had the best land; your neighbours would all have been heroes on earth, or related to the gods. It was a bit like paradise.
But parts of the Underworld needed improvement. People who behaved badly on earth were sent to Tartarous, which is “so dark that the night is poured around it in three rows like a collar round the neck.” And your neighbours would be other people who behaved deficiently.
Hades didn’t do all this alone. He had people who helped him. He oversaw the people who decided if you were sent to a nice area, or a nasty area,
Rhadamanthys, Minos and Aiakos. You wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of any of these characters.
When he wasn’t managing the Underworld, Hades liked to have some fun with his beloved dog. Cerebrus was a three-headed dog. Hades and Cerberus would climb aboard a stolen golden chariot and race across the Underworld, knocking everyone else out of the way.
We no longer believe in Greek gods like Hades, but we do continue to enjoy the tall tales told about them. The very popular Percy Jackson books are based on Greek legends. We still make and enjoy films about the gods. Clash of the Titans is one of the most well known; there is a wonderful old version, and a good modern one with CGI. It’s as close to immortality as those gods are these days.
